2020 Principal's Message
Journeying Together...... Towards Purposeful Learning
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” ~ John Dewey
In the constant quest to equip our students for the future, schools in Singapore embraced the ‘Learn for Life’ movement in 2018. This movement is a holistic, comprehensive and multi-year plan to evolve our education system for the future. As a nation, we have two movements today – Learn for Life (LfL) for school education and SkillsFuture for lifelong learning. LfL is the national effort to ensure education policies and processes keep evolving and adapting to ensure the system is fit for the future1.
At KCPSS, we see these shifts as exciting new possibilities to further engage our staff and students in purposeful, lifelong learning experiences. American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer, John Dewey articulated this succinctly when he said that, ‘education is life itself’. Dewey saw education as growth and believed that rich learning experiences enhanced an individual’s propensity for growth and further learning. Given the pace of technological evolution and knowledge creation today, it is imperative that we embrace education as life itself and help every child find meaning and purpose in his daily school experience.
“Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” - WB Yeat
Purposeful or intentional learning begins with igniting passion. As we enter into the new year, the school will sharpen our focus on providing students with a clear and understandable vision of learning targets at each stage. Students will be given opportunities to recognize and pursue their strengths and interests so that intentionality and purpose in learning are embraced. Teachers will continue to design and enact learning experiences to promote high engagement in and enjoyment of learning for all students. Students will be equipped to embrace greater ownership of learning and tasks will be designed to encourage students to self-assess, set goals for next steps and take their inquiry into areas of interest as far as they desire. The school will ensure that students are provided sufficient challenge and the requisite support to pursue interests in the academic and co-curricular domains and to realize and expand their potential with each learning experience.
“Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another.” ~ John Dewey
Purposeful, lifelong learning is a relentless pursuit of excellence, a constant search for the next best answer. Enjoyment of learning will require effort and perseverance, especially when the going gets tough. Discovering one’s passion will require deep inquiry, staying with the challenge, holding on till one experiences the ‘eureka’ moment. The school’s strong emphasis on character development will be further enhanced with structures to support students as they persevere in their pursuit of purpose in daily responsibilities. Students will be given opportunities to track, reflect on and share their learning progress and be provided with timely intervention support for an enriching year of purposeful learning.
We invite you, our readers, to journey with us into a year of purposeful learning for all at KCPSS!
